Is Heartworm Prevention Needed Year Round?

Heartworms are transmitted through mosquitoes. Dogs are hosts for mosquitoes, when a mosquito bites a dog that has heartworms it then transmits them to another dog, or cat. In Texas, mosquitoes are present year round and therefore it is very important to keep pets on heartworm prevention year round. This being said, it is a concern for pets that do not receive prevention. Due to a recent worldwide shortage of heartworm treatment, if a pet becomes infected with heartworms they may not have the option to receive treatment. There are numerous options of heartworm prevention and promotions being offered on many of them.
