Due to closing of the manufacturing plant Novartis, Interceptor and Sentinel will no longer be available. It is unknown if and when these products will be available on the market again. We will keep you updated when we know the latest information. There are other manufacturers products available including Heartgard and the newest on the market, Trifexis. There are great advantages to Trifexis, it contains the same active ingredient as Interceptor and Sentinel for heartworm prevention as well as an addition of the same active ingredient as Comfortis flea prevention. As pet owners, it is not only our choice it is our duty to ensure that our pets are cared for and protected in many ways. Annual exams, vaccinations, necessary medications and procedures, and tender loving care are all part of the pet owner regimen. Many pet owners do not believe that pets need vaccines, heartworm prevention or flea prevention. There are various viruses and diseases that are carried by animals that can be prevented by vaccination. Mosquitos are present year round in Texas even if there is not water near, these little flying insects carry heartworms and transmit them through our pets bloodstream, infecting them with the disease. Fleas are the pesky little creatures that are often forgotten about in households and many pet owners do not believe they have them in their homes when really they do, at times only noticing when the infestation is out of control. We all age, including our pets, and it is important for all to stay in good health. The holidays have passed and there have been many gifts received, including puppies and kittens! One of the most important tasks as a new owner of a puppy or kitten is having them examined by a Veterinarian and keeping them up to date on vaccines. Puppies have a high probability of contracting the very harmful and potentially deadly parvo virus without the vaccine, this is just one example of an illness that can be prevented by vaccination. Kittens have a higher chance of contracting the potentially fatal feline leukemia virus if not vaccinated. It is important to start puppies and kittens off on the right track and keep them vaccinated throughout adulthood to assist in helping them live long, healthy lives. Heartworms are transmitted through mosquitoes. Dogs are hosts for mosquitoes, when a mosquito bites a dog that has heartworms it then transmits them to another dog, or cat. In Texas, mosquitoes are present year round and therefore it is very important to keep pets on heartworm prevention year round. This being said, it is a concern for pets that do not receive prevention. Due to a recent worldwide shortage of heartworm treatment, if a pet becomes infected with heartworms they may not have the option to receive treatment. There are numerous options of heartworm prevention and promotions being offered on many of them.
